Client Q&A: Linda Potgieter
“I used to hold on to guilt wondering how to balance time with my business, my husband, my kids and not lose my mind. What I found out is it’s not actually not that difficult! “

Q: When did you first hear about First Steps To Success?
Melissa: Kevin and I had just gotten married. I was a workaholic. I worked 16-18 hours a day, 7 days a week. I was competing with Kevin in our business, even though we were supposed to be working together.
Our business had grown very quickly, but I didn’t know how to take it to the next level. I didn’t know what to do, so I prayed for a solution. I emailed a leader in our company. I’m not in her organization, but she was making a significant income, so I thought she must have some answers. She told me about Dani, and a week later I went to First Steps To Success. I was desperate!
Kevin: Our business was stagnant and heading in the wrong direction. We had just gotten married, and things weren’t bad or anything… but she had a boyfriend on the side called the iMac. She was spending 12-16 hours on the computer every day. I was always competing with that, always knocking on the door saying “Are you done yet?” That really would have developed into a much bigger problem in the future.
We came to Dani based on a referral from a colleague. We came to learn how to make more money, but we weren’t even looking for all the other stuff we got out of it.
Q: What was your first impression of the event?
Melissa: I went to the first event by myself. I had no idea that I was going to get training in so many areas of my life. I had no idea I even needed it! I felt like everything I had ever learned was not enough. This created a bigger vision for me. It made me really excited to see what was going to happen in coming months, because I didn’t realize what was possible until then. That first event changed everything!
Kevin: For me, the first event was the missing link in our business. All of our business problems dealt with relationship problems within our team. It was the missing link our team needed to get to the next level. It was amazing. I had finally found a training platform I could plug my people into instead of trying to be the trainer (and a poor one, at that). For me, the trainings on communication really enlightened me.
Q: What have you achieved since plugging in?
Kevin: Since January 2013 we’ve paid off $44K of debt in 11 months and became debt-free. We at least doubled, if not tripled, our income and we have multiple streams of income now. We’ve fed 500-600 orphans, we’ve traveled all over the Western Hemisphere, so far. I came to God in January 2013 at my first event and it has totally revolutionized my spiritual life.
Melissa: Our life has so much less stress. We have a lot of freedom in our life. We have the freedom to travel. We’ve had a baby, and our marriage is even better than we could have hoped for. It’s amazing how strong our marriage is because of what we’ve learned at First Steps To Success.
The community keeps you coming back. They’re family. We vacation together and party together. And they hold you accountable. They help you practice everything you learn in your real life. And obviously, the teaching keeps you coming back.
Q: What’s the most surprising thing about First Steps To Success?
Melissa: How fast everything happens! Once you put things into action, it snowballs and you start seeing results really fast.
We’ve paid off $44K of debt in 11 months. I cut my hours in half, and our income multiplied! I’m not working at all since we had our son, and our income is still growing!
And I’m shocked at how my relationship with the Lord has grown. We have the freedom to trust the Lord. He provides for us. He always does.
Q: What’s the biggest skill/strategy you’ve gotten?
Melissa: Definitely time management! I cut my hours from 80-100/week down to 20, and we have doubled or tripled our income. It has made me think about what is useful and what will get me to my goals. I used to get caught up in things that were not helpful or productive, but now I can focus on what’s important.
I’ve also learned how to understand people and talk to them. I know how to get people to open up and how to build relationships. This has opened so many doors that wouldn’t otherwise be there.
Q: What would you tell someone who is on the fence about coming to First Steps To Success?
Melissa: I know it takes a huge leap of faith to try something new, but you have to try it. You can’t afford to keep working this way. Time is the one thing you can never get more of. You don’t want to look back at your life, full of regret and wishing you’d spent your life differently.
Kevin: All you have to do is look at the results. If you want to get out of debt, solve your relationship problems, turn your failing business around, understand why you can’t communicate with your spouse and kids, you have to be here. This revolutionizes your whole life. That’s what keeps us coming back. It holds us accountable and we learn brand new things every time. We’ve already had great results, and those results are continuing to grow.
