Is Your Satisfaction An “Unsatisfactory” Career Path?
Everyone wants to live a fulfilled life. But if you look around today, you’ll see a world full of people constantly searching for satisfaction…and never quite finding it.
Several recent studies by different staffing and consulting firms have reported absolutely shocking results! Are you ready for this? According to the staffing firm, ManpowerGroup, 2 out of 3 people are not satisfied with their jobs. CNN reported 1 in 3 people say they will be seeking other employment within the next year, because of job-related stress and dissatisfaction. WHAT?! Seriously???
But that’s not even the most shocking part…
An article came across my desk awhile back from Fox Business. It suggested some acceptable reasons to leave your job include: you’re bored, your work has stopped teaching you, you’ve found something new, or you’ve lost sight of your career goals.
The article also reported, “If you’re no longer being challenged at work, it’s likely your work is suffering. This might be a great time to break up with your current position and move on to something new.”
But here’s what I know: There are all kinds of so-called career “experts” out there who are quick to tell you quitting your job and finding a new one is the answer to your dissatisfaction at work.
My friend, that is not the answer! If you’re waiting for the perfect job or opportunity to come along so you will be totally satisfied… if you are waiting for your kids to be perfect and not give you any problems ever again… if you are waiting for the right spouse to make you totally happy forever… you need a reality check!
Our society is so focused on whether or not something satisfies them, but they don’t know how to find satisfaction in what they’re doing. They see an article like the one from Fox Business, and even if they aren’t dissatisfied in their current job, they start thinking that way. They see boredom presented as an acceptable reason to leave a job, so guess what? Soon they complain about being bored at work!
One thing leads to another, and the next thing you know, they become completely dissatisfied and miserable in their job. Yes, this employee – who was once a hard worker and very happy at their job – is now convinced he or she is in a “dead-end job.”
One career “expert” told Forbes, “A dead-end job is one where you don’t see any opportunity for growth, or where an everyday task seems like a burden instead of an achievement, or where there is no appreciation or acknowledgement for your work.” REALLY??? HELLO!!! Wake up!
If you just wait for an opportunity to grow to come knocking on your door, you’ve got a problem. If you don’t see any opportunity for growth in your current position, then guess what… your job is not the dead end… YOU ARE!
Your perception becomes your reality, whether it’s true or not. You will always be limited by what you cannot see. If you grumble and complain about not having the right opportunities, you are never going to find any opportunities. Complaining causes you to focus on what might be wrong, instead of focusing on fixing the problem.
So you’ve got to set your sights on finding satisfaction and finding opportunities to grow. I promise, you will find them!
The truth is, regardless of your job, there is always room for growth. There is always an opportunity to improve. If you are bored in your job, don’t go looking for another job! Look for new skills you can learn, and new needs you can fill, inside of your company. If you feel underpaid or under-appreciated, don’t walk away! Look for ways to increase your value.
You must prosper where you’re planted. I know it’s easy to think if you just had the perfect job or if you married the perfect person or if you had the perfect kids, you wouldn’t have any of the problems you’re facing right now. But the truth is, none of that stuff really matters. It wouldn’t matter if you had the perfect job… if you are not looking for satisfaction, you won’t be satisfied.
So it all comes down to this: Find satisfaction in your work. When you work with excellence and diligence and become truly invested into your company, you will find satisfaction.
Have you ever experienced either side of this equation – being totally dissatisfied, or totally satisfied, in your work? I’d love to know what you think about this. Tell me what makes you satisfied when it comes to work. I really love hearing your feedback, and I’m looking forward to seeing what you have to say about The Daily Fix today.
