Recently, we put out a question on Facebook asking what you need help with. One of the biggest complaints that shows up over and over and over again? It was shocking… so many comments involved trouble with focus, busy-ness, dealing with distractions and time management. And trust me, they are all definitely pieces of the same puzzle!
Did you know focus is an actual skill set you can learn? But, just like any other skill, if you don’t practice and hone your skill, you’ll find yourself struggling constantly. It’s work – I won’t kid you. But just imagine your life when you do master this skill set and are able to put 100% of your focus on the goals and tasks in front of you. Think about how your productivity and success will soar as you get more done… faster!
Contrary to what you might think, you don’t have to work more hours to get more done. That is the difference between working intensively and working extensively.
“There’s no such thing as not enough time, only a confusion of priorities”
I heard this quote from speaker Alex Green at a conference and it is something I have seen in my life. Time management is all about where your priorities are! But these skill sets don’t come easily… they have to be learned and practiced. Stop being a slave to time TODAY and
start prioritizing your success.
So if you’re sowing into a skill set focused on, well, FOCUS, you will find yourself more productive, a better problem-solver, more efficient at time management and readily achieving your goals. Overall, this one thing makes you more valuable at work and will position you for promotion (in every area of your life).
The Law of Focus says whatever you focus on is what you get good at. If you spend all your time focusing on things you can’t do, things that aren’t working or other situations you have no control over, your focus is split. You’ll find it takes you longer to get things done and it won’t even be your best work. And in the end, the only skill you’ve mastered is how to increase your stress over things where you have no control!
You can actually split focus – it can be at work, in your finances, in your relationships. And, if you’re trying to juggle two tasks at once or achieve two goals at the exact same time, you’ve just issued an invitation to distraction – simply because your focus is split! You can’t look north and south at the same time.
If you practice these two major areas daily designed to hone your focus skill sets, you will condition that “focus muscle” for some heavy lifting in your life!
- Make a list of what needs to get done at work today, around the house or in any area of your life. After the list is done, prioritize it. What absolutely, positively, MUST get done first? If there are multiple urgent deadlines, you might find this difficult. If you work for someone else, try asking your manager which item they would like done first. Then, only focus on those priorities and don’t even think or worry about the other ones yet. Set your mind on what is in front of you and what you can accomplish NOW.
- Set aside an hour or two a day that are “distraction-free” zones. Turn off your phone, log out of Facebook or even disconnect the Internet if that is what you need!
It comes down to this simple evaluation. What is getting you results, helping you achieve your goals and moving you forward in life? What tasks are mindless, keeping you from your goals and causing extra stress?
It’s time to weed the stuff that isn’t helping you, right out of your garden! What distractions, meaningless tasks or unfruitful habits do you need to get rid of? Tell me about it in your comments below and “Like” and “Share” today’s message.
