I have a question for you today. On the surface it may seem like a simple question. But don’t read over it too quickly, or you may miss it.
What are you doing today, to increase your skill at work?
It doesn’t matter what you do – whether you own your own business or work for someone else – this still applies to you. Bottom line, what determines your value in the marketplace is NOT your looks, your personality or your background. It’s your skill.
Consider this: Who makes more money, a general M.D. or a brain surgeon? The brain surgeon, of course! Why? Because he has specialized knowledge and skills. He has invested more time and money into learning higher skill sets.
It works the same way for you and me. If you increase your skill level, you will increase your pay.
And, good news – we each control our own skills. Therefore, we each control our own paychecks!
So, let me ask you again: What are you doing today to increase your skill at work?
I’m not asking what you did in college or last year or last week or even over the weekend. I’m asking what you’re doing today.
Dominate The Job Market & Control Your Future
Landing (and keeping) a job in today’s job market can be tough. That’s why it’s important to immunize yourself from the economy. Never again will you worry about unemployment, layoffs or being passed up for a promotion. You will dominate the job market today!
Here’s how!
Many people mistakenly think it’s enough to only occasionally invest into their skills. They think just because they took a class last year or majored in a specific area in college, they’re set. But in reality, if you’re not growing, you’re falling behind… quickly!
So, let’s start with these three ways you can increase your value at work. You can begin in a ton of different ways, but these are just three easy “baby steps” for you today:
- Read a book. Do some research to find the top books in your field. When you’re researching, look for testimonials of real results. Be very careful who you listen to and allow to speak into your life. Also keep in mind, the biggest breakthroughs often come from two unrelated industries. So, even if you don’t consider yourself to be “in sales” you could find massive inspiration and discover new skill sets by reading a book on sales. Or, perhaps you will discover ways to implement management strategies in your team, even if you’re not in an official management position. Keep an open mind, and ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?” While books are inexpensive and don’t take much time, remember you will only get out what you put in. Don’t expect to get massive results from simply reading a book. However, it can be a good way to continuously expose yourself to many different ideas, concepts, strategies and skill sets.
- Take a class. Find a college course, an online workshop or seminar to attend. Again, you want to be very careful when it comes to who you allow to speak into your life. All seminars, trainers, speakers and classes are not created equal. (Not even close!) That’s why testimonials play a crucial role. Don’t look for people who say, “I loved this class!” or “So-and-so is such a great speaker!” Look for cold, hard facts. Like Chad and Sommer, who said, “When we first came to First Steps To Success, we averaged $70 a month in our business. Today we average $50K-$60K per month, all because of what we learned at First Steps.” Or Mike Gibson, who told us, “Since plugging into First Steps To Success, I have tripled my income and we paid off $32K of debt in 7 months!”
- Look and listen for needs inside your company. What needs can you fill, either for your boss, your team or your clients? What gaps exist in your team? Ask yourself these two questions:
What skills do I have, able to satisfy these needs?
What skills can I learn, to fill these needs?
By filling these gaps/needs, you immediately increase your value!
I’m telling you, friend, when you consistently prioritize increasing your value, you WILL see incredible results! You will receive raises and promotions at work. Your business will explode! You will be shocked by the growth you see – in yourself and in your bank account!
