“The difference between the mediocre and successful is VISION.” — Dani Johnson

As I continue to think about what I learned during my first First Steps To Success event, I keep going back to that quote from Dani: “the difference between the mediocre and successful is VISION.” I heard it at the event, but it took a couple of weeks for it to really sink in.

I’ve been very open about fighting my WAR ON DEBT and my goals for becoming debt-free. But there’s one key thing that’s been missing. If I’m going to be successful in reaching this goal, there is one very important question that I need to answer: What’s my vision for my money and financial future?

Dani teaches that if any relationship is expected to be successful, both parties must be on the same page when it comes to creating a vision. We can’t put careful consideration and thought into creating our vision and expect our partner to just go with it. So, that’s what I’m doing now. And I’ll be straight with you – at first, I really didn’t think I needed to do this. In all honesty, I was really nervous about doing this. But Dani is absolutely right. I can’t work on this very important thing in my life and just keep it to myself. If my relationship is expected to not just survive, but thrive, it can’t just be my vision alone that is getting all my attention. No, it needs to be OUR vision.

If I had gone through this exercise with my former spouse, I can only imagine how our relationship would have been different. Would we have stayed married? If not, would we have had the same financial issues we had when we decided to end our marriage? I can only imagine, but I’m guessing that things would have been very different.  It’s a shame that my hindsight is 2020 when my vision should have been. However, now that I know better, I can do better.

Another thing that Dani said that has really hit home was, “how you see your life is how you live your life.” If I continue to see myself as one big financial mess, spending time thinking only about my past mistakes and deciding that this is “just the way it is,” then that’s what I will get. I’ll continue to repeat past patterns and get the same outcomes. But again, now that I know better, I can (and will) do better. I am flipping the script on my financial future. I have the tools and am actually using them.

There’s a lot more to reaching a goal than just putting it out into the universe. If nothing becomes dynamic until it becomes specific, I need to be specific in what I’ll be doing to make sure my financial future is secure and I am leaving a positive legacy. Being in a committed relationship means that this shouldn’t be done alone. Remember: if any relationship is expected to be successful, both parties must be on the same page when it comes to creating a vision. Working together to outline the steps to achieve this vision is so important. And because I refuse to repeat past patterns and mistakes, that’s what I’m doing.
